Do you have a family photoshoot coming up? After many years in this industry, I use this same 5 techniques for every single family shoots to prepare for success.

1) Location Scouting

Few days before you session you want to explore the location at the ideal time you plan to do the photoshoot. Find 3 ideal locations at close proximity to provide the “variety background”, that way you are not just photo shooting at the same spot. Look for a place you can shoot both facing the light and backlight. Open shade is ALWAYS a good plan and avoid tree lines that give uneven lighting. Time how long you will need to get from one location to other 2 locations so you have an idea how long you can spend in each spot and walking to the next.

2) Shoot to sell

Providing your clients with variety of poses, just like background, will scale your photography business. In my case, I sell fine art prints to my clients. When I plan my poses, I think “which pose would look great for 20×24, 12×12, or 8x10s”. This gives you idea of posing with a purpose. Some example MUST have in all family session: Formal family portrait, lifestyle candid, Couples, children, One parent with the kids, and a request from client.

3) Call client 3 days before

Call your client days before the session to discuss: Location confirmation, where to meet photographer, what time to meet, what to expect, making sure the kids napped, have snacks and drinks available, bringing a comfort toy, removing unwelcome items (hair ties on wrist) ahead of time, and making sure everyone is well prepared.

4) Prepare for kids

We never know how kids will play out for the day. Preparation from both clients and photographer is key! I try to knock out all the kids posing ahead of time if they are up for it. Kids can always sense the environment if safe and fun, so set the tempo for them. I have stuff animal attached to my camera and as a back up “YOUTUBE kids” have been a god-send. If you don’t have an assistant, I would recommend having one of those tools where your phone can attach to your camera.

5) Relax, trust the process, and enjoy

Remember, these families are letting you in a moment in their lives. You are the bridge between a captured a moment and wall art masterpiece they will treasure for life. Set the tempo for the families. After all the preparation you have done, enjoy laughing with them, encourage their poses, and give an experience they can enjoy with whole family.
